Beat the Heat!

This has been one hot summer - probably one of the hottest summers we've had in a while. With the added humidity, it's almost impossible to go outside for more than 10 minutes without breaking a sweat.

This type of heat has consequences that can sneak up on you. The effects might not be immediate, but you'll surely feel them sooner or later.

Ways to Stay Cool

  • Dress light. Wearing loose-fitting clothing allows your body to breathe and if there's ever a breeze, it will allow air to flow. Wearing tight clothing may cause you to sweat more than necessary, dehydrating you faster.

  • Avoid heavy foods and meals. Believe it or not, it's harder for your body to digest and break down heavy foods when it's really hot out. Try opting for hydration-rich foods to add to meals or as snacks like watermelon, citrus fruits, or cucumbers.

  • Try your best to avoid being outside for long periods of time. For some this is unavoidable, but if you're able to stay in an environment with cool air, you should.

  • Wear protective clothing. Hats and sunglasses come in handy during hot weather like this. Providing protection from the sun and some shade will go a long way if you have to be outside.

  • Take a cool shower. This is one of the best ways to cool down, and quickly.

If you have to go out during the day, be sure to wear sunscreen (at least 15 SPF) and bring water to stay hydrated throughout the day!
